Last week, City Paper reporter Jon Hurdle and I spoke with Rev. Napoleon Divine, the Pastor from a church on the same block as the deadly fire that swept through Southwest Philadelphia, leaving 42 people homeless. As you may remember, some of the community blamed firefighters for not responding in a timely matter. This pastor couldn't disagree more. As a community leader, and a very charismatic, gentle, intelligent man, he says that the city has worked with the community in every way possible to help survivors and investigate the cause. Because of Rev. Napoleon and other leaders in this Liberian community, the young people who began the protests have stopped. He claims that there is so much positive that the media did not cover because they focused on the protests and blew everything out of proportion with negative headlines. Read some of the real story here. I feel humbled by this man and his wonderful church.
